A Little Q & A...

Q: What aspect of the music industry do you like best? Writing? Live performance? Recording?

A: There is no way to compare them, and that's not a cop-out.  I can become equally enthralled and completely thrown into all of those aspects of the industry.  But I do love to perform live.  I think as long as I am able to perform, I will do it and be fulfilled by it, even if the other aspects were not a part of my life.

Q: When did you first decide that you wanted to pursue music?

A: I was at the Western Music Association fest in Tucson, AZ (2001), the first festival I had been to of its kind and a knobby-kneed fifteen at the time.  I had been introduced to Western Swing, Hot Jazz, Swing, and Country music, but I was still figuring out what I liked best and still learning how to play by ear with my accordion.  Long story short, I was pretty clueless about improvising solos well.  Still, I picked around from room to room on the convention floor, in search of a jamming thrill.  And then, such sweet sounds came from a large gathering of folks in the hotel lobby.  There they were: a pretty young gal on fiddle, a tall mysteriously-handsome guitarist, and a baby-faced bass picker with a smile like rows of lilies.  They were playing the fire out of their instruments, and were joined by one of my all-time favorite musicians: Woody Paul of Riders In The Sky.  This was my first real jam experience and the band was Hot Club Of Cowtown out of Austin, TX.  I stayed up with the big dogs until 4 AM and I couldn't play well at all, really.  But they were so kind and welcoming, and encouraged me to hang out and try my hand at solos every now and then.  When I realized I was leaning on a tall plant to hold myself up, I finally dragged myself to bed with dreams and visions of a life full of music and songs and creativity.  It was that night that it weighed so pleasantly heavy in my heart, I thought it would burst!

My Tennessee Hills  (Janis Ian)

When all my dreams have been shattered
And the fabric of life comes undone
When it seems like nothing matters
And all of my good times are gone
There's a place that I've kept sheltered
From the sight of my sorrow and shame
Though it's years since I beheld her
She still calls my name

I'll go home, I'll go home
Where the wild shadows roam
And the dawn over mountaintops spills
Where the deer pause in flight
On the edge of the night
I'll go home to my Tennessee hills
I'll go home to my Tennessee hills

When all my vows have been broken
And my wild heart can't be tamed
When I've loved and lost once too often
And failure is my middle name
There's a place that holds forgiveness
And the promise of peace in despair
When I'm down to my last witness
I'll be going there
